(I) Heart Doughnuts!

I haven't done too much cooking or baking this pregnancy.  I have been too worn out.  But, a couple of weeks ago, my sweet tooth got the better of me and I set out to make homemade doughnuts.  I used the Artisan Bread in Five Minutes a Day doughnut recipe (  It uses the brioche dough (which is always great for us as it uses up 8 eggs, an ingredient we are always trying to use up!) and then calls for frying the dough in a stock pot.  This weekend, I made doughnuts a second time (they really were that easy :)) with Rory's help.  It was fun to be back in the kitchen with a little one and the result was pretty darn good.

Fairy lake

This weekend Finnan and Jude set out to make the biggest and deepest fairy lake in the whole world!

It all reminded me of our mud oven building over three years ago.  One picture in particular:

First days of school

Both boys have had a great first few days of school.  On his first day, Jude insisted that he did not want me to walk him to his classroom.  When we got to carpool line, both the boys jumped out of the car (even though Finnan insisted that he was not looking forward to school starting) practically forgetting their backpacks.

Finnan lucked out and not only got his favorite teacher from last year (his Spanish teacher became a 1st grade teacher) but also seems to be with a great group of kids.  He already seems more comfortable and confident.  Jude has been so much fun to watch these first couple of days.  He is just so full of positive energy and is so happy to be going to school.  Last night we went to a neighborhood picnic and the boys were given whistles.  Before Jude went to bed he told me, "Mommy, do you know why I got this whistle?  So I can help Ms. Nguyen.  Sometimes she whistles to get our class lined up and now I can help her."  I thought this was so funny and sweet, but I did make him leave the whistle at home :)

Rory has been adjusting fine.  He seems to be talking a lot more...I guess he feels like he needs to fill the silence.  He will start going to Ms. Sara's playgroup in two weeks.  She had an opening in her summer play group yesterday, so I sent him for the first time and he loved it.  He kept talking about his teacher, Ms. Sara, always blushing with a big smile.  I also found out today Ms. Gabriela is going to be helping at Ms. Sara's one day a week, which makes me so happy!  I think Rory is just as excited as I am to pick up the boys every afternoon.  I have to be careful to only mention it when it is actually time, because as soon as he hears that it is pick up time he is out the door, climbing into his car seat.

And Atticus and I have already gotten back into our rhythm of daily morning walks and a weekly lunch date.  So, I'd have to say, back to school has been pretty good.  And, although I am desperate for cooler weather, for now we still even get to hit the pool in the afternoons :)
